Rapper Open Mike Eagle and producer Kenny Segal have teamed up for their first full-length studio album, DOOMED!. The project serves as a deep dive into the complexities of romantic breakups, a theme the artists frame as a central thesis throughout the record.
While the pair has collaborated previously, DOOMED! marks their most significant joint effort to date. The production features a departure from Segal's more wandering styles, offering a grounded soundscape that incorporates warbly piano, strings, and psychedelic synthesizers. Tracks like “Streets of Rage: Public Arguments Edition” showcase a funk-inspired bassline, while “Out to Lunch” utilizes precise, robotic percussion.
Lyrically, Open Mike Eagle maintains his signature attention to detail and penchant for pop culture references, citing subjects ranging from anime to Beanie Babies. However, the album is noted for its vulnerability, with tracks such as “Unfinished Concrete Initials” highlighting the internal struggle of processing past relationships. The song “She Swear I’m Colorblind,” which features Billy Woods, exemplifies the album's atmosphere, pairing tense, foreboding production with lyrics about interpersonal conflict.
Despite the heavy subject matter, the album retains moments of humor, such as the track “Schrödinger’s Green Room (There but Uninvited),” where Eagle reflects on intrusive thoughts. DOOMED! is currently available for listeners on major streaming platforms and Bandcamp.
