Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s decision to remove Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has triggered widespread public demonstrations and criticism from civil society. Protesters gathered in Kyiv and other cities on Thursday, carrying signs that urged the president to stop interfering with the ministry’s leadership and chanting slogans in support of the outgoing minister.

Fedorov, 35, was appointed in January and gained recognition for his efforts to modernize the ministry, combat corruption, and integrate high-tech solutions like drone warfare into the military’s strategy. His departure follows a period of documented friction between the defence ministry and the General Staff, specifically involving Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi. Fedorov stated that his initiatives were frequently blocked and that he had previously suggested replacing both Syrskyi and Chief of the General Staff Andrii Hnatov to resolve the systemic conflict.

President Zelensky acknowledged the internal discord, noting that the relationship between the two branches of leadership required his mediation. While Zelensky has proposed Maj-Gen Yevhenii Khmara as an acting replacement, he clarified that no official appointment has been finalized. Amid the reshuffle, parliament also confirmed Serhiy Koretsky as the new prime minister, succeeding Yuliia Svyrydenko.

The dismissal has drawn sharp criticism from military personnel and former advisers. Pavlo Yelizarov, a prominent drone unit commander, resigned from his post in the Ukrainian Air Force in protest, describing the decision as a detriment to the nation's defensive capabilities. Despite the backlash, Zelensky stated he is listening to the public's concerns. Fedorov, who declined an offer to remain as an adviser to the president, expressed confidence that the situation would be resolved, emphasizing that he acted according to his conscience.
