Hundreds of conversations between users and Anthropic’s AI chatbot, Claude, were recently found to be indexed by major search engines, including Google. The logs, which were accessible via simple site-specific search queries, contained a variety of sensitive information, including personal contact details, resumes, and proprietary corporate research.
The issue stemmed from the chatbot's "share" feature, which generates a link for users to distribute their chat history. While the interface notes that anyone with the link can view the content, it does not explicitly warn users that these links may be crawled and indexed by search engines. Reddit users first identified the vulnerability, uncovering over 200 conversations spanning at least 25 pages of search results.
An Anthropic spokesperson stated that users retain control over their shared links, noting that these URLs are "not guessable or discoverable unless people choose to share them themselves." The company further explained that once a conversation is shared, it becomes public web content that may be archived by third-party services. Following the discovery, the search availability of these logs was removed, likely through the use of standard tools that allow website owners to block indexing.
Google clarified that it does not determine which pages are public, emphasizing that the responsibility lies with site owners to implement controls that prevent crawling and indexing. Similar incidents have previously affected other AI platforms, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT and X’s Grok, both of which saw private chat logs exposed through search engines in the past year.
