The Rhine, a vital artery for European commerce, has reached unprecedented depths in parts of Germany and the Netherlands, with measuring stations in Cologne and Lobith reporting levels lower than any previously recorded.

The economic implications for inland shipping are significant. At the critical Kaub chokepoint, water depth recently matched 2018 record lows. Martin Wolters of the Rhine Waterways and Shipping Authority explained that while total suspension of traffic is not expected, operators must reduce cargo loads to prevent vessels from grounding. Saltwater intrusion at the river's mouth is threatening local ecosystems and complicating agricultural irrigation. Experts from the World Weather Attribution group suggest that while long-term rainfall trends remain complex, human-induced climate change is exacerbating drought conditions by accelerating moisture evaporation through rising temperatures.
