A significant advancement in medical technology may soon address the critical time constraints associated with organ transplantation. Traditionally, donor organs are stored on ice at approximately 4 °C (39 °F) to prevent deterioration, but this method is limited by a narrow window of viability. Previous attempts to freeze organs to extend this duration have failed due to the formation of ice, which causes irreversible cellular damage.

Researchers have now developed a new device capable of cooling organs to -4 °C (25 °F) while successfully preventing the formation of ice. In recent tests, pig kidneys were preserved using this technology for several days before being transplanted successfully. This development marks a landmark achievement in the field, offering a potential solution to the rapid degradation that currently limits the time surgeons have to transport and transplant donor organs.
