Pigeon fancying is a global pursuit that combines competition with deep personal dedication, as evidenced by the record-breaking £1.44 million sale of a racing pigeon in 2020. However, the hobby carries potential health risks for some enthusiasts. Prolonged exposure to proteins found in bird droppings, feathers, and the fine powder known as bloom can lead to a condition called hypersensitivity pneumonitis, or "pigeon lung."
In susceptible individuals, inhaling these substances can trigger an immune response, causing inflammation in the lungs' air sacs. While many fanciers remain unaffected, others may experience symptoms such as fever, coughing, and breathlessness. If left unaddressed, repeated inflammation can result in pulmonary fibrosis, where permanent scarring makes the lungs stiffer and impairs oxygen transfer.
Diagnosing the condition is complex, as there is no single definitive test. Patients often face challenges in the healthcare system, with some reporting that their hobby is dismissed by medical professionals, leading to a reluctance to disclose their exposure to birds. To address these gaps, the British Pigeon Fanciers Genetics of Interstitial Lung Disease study has been collecting data at major events like the British Homing World Show of the Year since 2019.
Supported by the British Pigeon Fanciers Medical Research Trust, the research team utilizes spirometry and oscillometry to assess lung function, alongside blood samples to analyze DNA and inflammatory markers. By studying both healthy individuals and those with symptoms, researchers aim to uncover why some breeders are more susceptible to lung disease than others. This work may also offer broader insights into other forms of hypersensitivity pneumonitis, such as "farmer’s lung" or conditions linked to environmental triggers like contaminated humidifiers.
With over 500 participants involved, the project emphasizes the importance of collaboration between scientists and the pigeon-fancying community. Beyond gathering data, the initiative provides guidance on protective measures, such as improved ventilation and the use of masks, while respecting the cultural and personal significance of the sport.
