A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket successfully carried the Mission Robotic Vehicle (MRV) into space following a July 21 launch from Cape Canaveral. The spacecraft, which carries the Robotic Servicing of Geosynchronous Satellites (RSGS) payload, is currently traveling toward its destination in geosynchronous Earth orbit.

The RSGS program is a collaborative effort funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and designed to enhance in-space servicing capabilities. The vehicle features twin robotic arms created by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, which are integrated into the Northrop Grumman-built MRV. This technology is intended to perform in-orbit inspections and install propulsion modules, known as mission extension pods, to keep satellites operational for longer periods.

NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center joined the project in 2024 through an interagency agreement. The agency is contributing its expertise in space robotics—honed through previous work on the Hubble Space Telescope and the International Space Station—by providing flight operators, software analysis, and dynamic simulation tools. By enabling the maintenance of satellites that might otherwise be decommissioned due to fuel depletion or obsolescence, the mission seeks to foster more cost-effective and innovative space exploration.
