A clear satellite image captured on August 24, 2026, has provided a rare look at Mount Michael, a stratovolcano situated on Saunders Island in the South Atlantic. The image, taken by the Landsat 8 satellite, utilized infrared sensors to detect heat signatures emanating from a lava lake within the volcano's summit crater. Additional signs of activity, including a volcanic plume and darkened snow on the northern slopes, were also visible.
Mount Michael is part of the South Sandwich Islands, a volcanic chain formed by tectonic plate subduction. Due to the extreme isolation of the region, researchers depend on satellite monitoring to track volcanic behavior. Analysis of three decades of thermal data from various satellite instruments has confirmed that Mount Michael maintains a persistent lava lake, a rare geological feature shared by only a few other volcanoes globally, such as Kīlauea and Erta Ale.
Ongoing monitoring through systems like MIROVA indicates that the volcano has experienced low-intensity activity for several years, with frequent emissions of sulfur dioxide and other gases detected by the Aura satellite. While weather conditions in the region are often restrictive, subsequent imagery from Landsat 9 and the Aqua satellite captured further atmospheric phenomena, including wave clouds formed by the 843-meter-high peak and tracks caused by volcanic degassing.
