A raccoon nicknamed "Jimothy" has become the internet's latest viral phenomenon after a video of the animal moving through a Seattle neighborhood gained millions of views. The footage, originally shared on Instagram by local resident Kiana Hall, shows the raccoon displaying a unique, spindly gait. While viewers have speculated that the animal may have short spine syndrome, this has not been medically confirmed.
The raccoon's sudden fame follows a pattern of viral animal trends, such as Moo Deng and Neil the Seal. Dr. Idil Galip, a digital culture researcher at the University of Amsterdam, noted that increased human-raccoon interactions in urban areas, combined with the rapid nature of social media, allow such footage to become memes almost instantly. "More encounters mean more footage of raccoons being funny," Galip explained.
The "Jimothy" craze has extended beyond social media, resulting in a mural in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle, a custom Google search animation, and references in video games like World of Warcraft and Minecraft. Additionally, the raccoon has been featured in various brand marketing campaigns and political social media posts. Some users have also utilized the viral moment to raise awareness regarding the care of wild animals with congenital conditions.
Despite the widespread attention, local officials have urged the public to maintain distance. The Washington state health department stated on Threads that while the raccoon poses no public health risk, individuals should refrain from attempting to feed, pet, or cuddle the animal.
