A fatal explosion in the Plaka district of Athens has claimed the lives of six individuals. The incident, which occurred on Friday, led to the total collapse of a three-storey building that housed a holiday rental property located near the Acropolis and the Temple of Olympian Zeus.

Authorities have confirmed that the victims included four American tourists, one British national, and one Greek resident. The tourists were reported missing after failing to appear for a scheduled flight on Friday evening. Emergency responders recovered all six bodies by Saturday afternoon, utilizing thermal imaging equipment and heavy machinery to clear the debris.

While the investigation is ongoing, officials suspect a gas leak triggered the blast. The force of the explosion caused significant damage to surrounding structures, necessitating evacuations in the immediate vicinity and resulting in injuries to bystanders from flying debris. Athens Mayor Haris Doukas described the event as an "incredible disaster." The UK Foreign Office has confirmed it is coordinating with Greek authorities regarding the incident.
