Sony Music Entertainment has filed a fresh lawsuit in a New York court targeting the AI music platform Udio. The legal action alleges that the company's generative AI models infringed upon the copyrights of more than 30,000 musical works, including tracks by artists such as Elvis Presley, Beyoncé, and Harry Styles.
This development follows a previous legal challenge initiated in 2024, in which Sony, alongside Universal Music Group and Warner Records, sued both Udio and Suno. During that process, Sony utilized audio fingerprinting technology to identify thousands of additional songs it claimed were ingested into Udio's training data. Although Sony attempted to include these works in the initial case, a judge denied the motion, limiting that lawsuit to 333 specific works.
The new filing asserts that the 30,000 identified songs represent only a fraction of the works allegedly misused by the platform. Sony contends that Udio acknowledged its models were built by processing vast quantities of sound recordings, including content sourced from YouTube. While Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group have since settled their disputes and entered into partnerships with Udio, Sony is pursuing damages of up to $150,000 per infringed work and seeking an injunction to prevent further unauthorized use of its catalog.
