A drone attack attributed to the Sudanese army has claimed the lives of 35 people in the village of Ghara al-Zawiya. The strike occurred on Sunday afternoon during a traditional court session held outdoors, where community leaders had gathered under a tree.
The Emergency Lawyers Group, which tracks civilian casualties in the ongoing conflict, reported that the incident also left dozens of individuals wounded. According to witness accounts, the strike involved multiple missiles launched by two drones. Among the fatalities were four tribal leaders and two commanders from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which maintains control over the area.
The Sudanese army has not issued a statement regarding the incident. The Emergency Lawyers Group has condemned the strike, characterizing the targeting of civilian gatherings as a serious breach of international humanitarian law, and has called for a formal investigation into the event.
This attack marks another escalation in the three-year civil war that has caused widespread displacement and significant loss of life across Sudan. The conflict has seen both the army and the RSF accused of utilizing drone technology to strike civilian-populated areas. While the RSF currently holds the majority of the Darfur region, it has also faced international scrutiny, including allegations from a UN fact-finding mission regarding its conduct during the siege of el-Fasher.
