Authorities in Switzerland have taken a 43-year-old Swiss national into custody following a deadly shooting at a techno rave in the town of Aarau. The incident, which occurred at the Schachen horse racing track, resulted in the death of 22-year-old Italian citizen Maria Spinelli.
The shooting took place early Sunday morning, with police receiving reports of gunfire at approximately 02:30 local time. In addition to the fatality, five individuals—four men and one woman between the ages of 24 and 27—sustained injuries ranging from minor to severe and were transported to a hospital for treatment. An eyewitness reported to the Swiss outlet Blick that attendees initially mistook the gunshots for fireworks.
Aarau cantonal police launched a manhunt that lasted nearly 24 hours before apprehending the suspect shortly before 01:00 local time on Monday. Officials stated that they believe the individual acted alone, though the investigation into the motive and the specific circumstances of the attack remains ongoing.
The event, held in a town located roughly 46km west of Zurich, had been expected to draw a crowd of approximately 3,500 people. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed confidence in the Swiss authorities' ability to resolve the case, and the Italian foreign ministry has dispatched officials to Zurich to monitor the proceedings.
