A tragic blaze in the La Victoria district of Lima, Peru, resulted in the deaths of ten family members early Wednesday morning. According to General Oscar Arriola of the Peruvian National Police, the victims included five children ranging from three to 15 years old, and five adults.
The fire broke out at approximately 03:00 local time, trapping 17 family members inside the residence. While seven individuals managed to escape the flames, the ten victims were unable to get out, and their remains were reportedly burned beyond recognition. Two additional people sustained injuries during the incident.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire amid reports of potential criminal activity. Local media outlets suggest the family, who operated a mattress-manufacturing business and owned electric motorcycles, had previously been targeted by extortionists. Neighbors reported to the government news agency Andina that unidentified individuals may have ignited motorcycles parked outside the property, causing the fire to spread rapidly through the highly flammable materials stored inside.
In an official statement, the National Police of Peru expressed deep sorrow, noting that the nation is mourning the loss of the family. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fire remain ongoing.
