Former President Donald Trump has publicly attributed a series of cyberattacks targeting Minnesota’s water infrastructure to Governor Tim Walz. During recent remarks to reporters, Trump dismissed the possibility of foreign involvement, stating, “I don’t think there was an Iranian cyberattack,” despite federal agencies suggesting otherwise.
The FBI, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) have not issued a formal attribution for the Minnesota incidents. However, there is a growing consensus among officials that Iran is the likely perpetrator. These attacks affected at least 30 community water systems across the state. CISA has previously linked similar infrastructure breaches earlier this year to Iranian actors, who have utilized digital operations as a means of countering U.S. policy.
The FBI recently issued a broader warning indicating that these cyber threats against American infrastructure are expanding to additional states. Trump provided no evidence to support his claim regarding Governor Walz. The former president has frequently criticized the Minnesota governor throughout his second term, including previous threats to utilize the Insurrection Act during state-level immigration enforcement operations.
