Uber has officially launched its autonomous vehicle service in London, becoming the first company to offer robotaxi rides in the United Kingdom. The initial rollout consists of 15 self-driving vehicles permitted to operate within the city.
Despite the autonomous technology, each vehicle is required to have a human safety driver present in the driver's seat. These operators are tasked with monitoring the journey and are prepared to take manual control of the vehicle if necessary.
Passengers can book these rides through the standard Uber app. The company has confirmed that pricing for the autonomous service will be consistent with existing options such as UberX, Uber Electric, and Uber Comfort, with the total cost provided to the user before the trip begins.
