Uber has officially launched the United Kingdom's first robotaxi service in London, deploying a small fleet of 15 autonomous vehicles. While the cars are capable of navigating city streets using artificial intelligence, each vehicle is currently required to carry a human safety driver prepared to intervene if necessary.

The service utilizes Ford Mustang electric vehicles equipped with technology from the UK-based firm Wayve. The system relies on roof-mounted sensors and AI to analyze traffic conditions in real time, rather than following pre-programmed routes. Customers can access the service through the Uber app, where the option may appear for certain trips. Pricing for these autonomous rides is set to match standard UberX, Electric, or Comfort fares.

Sarfraz Maredia, Uber’s global head of autonomous mobility and delivery, stated that the company intends to phase in the technology over several years, emphasizing that human drivers will remain a significant part of the platform for the foreseeable future. Despite the launch, the path to fully driverless operations remains uncertain. While the government previously aimed for fully autonomous hire vehicles by 2026, officials now suggest a framework for 2027 is more realistic, citing the need for rigorous safety testing and regulatory oversight.

The rollout has drawn scrutiny from labor representatives, with the GMB union warning of potential economic and social disruption for human drivers. Meanwhile, industry experts, including Professor Siddartha Khastgir of the University of Warwick, have highlighted the technical challenges of programming vehicles to handle the complex, often unpredictable nature of urban driving, such as yielding to emergency services.

Competitors, including Google’s Waymo and China’s Baidu, are also vying for a foothold in the UK market. Waymo has already been conducting test drives on London streets, though its long-term strategy focuses on fully driverless operations without human intervention.
