Prime Minister Andy Burnham is set to host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday, signaling a continuation of the United Kingdom's commitment to Ukraine. This visit marks the first time a foreign leader has met with Burnham since he assumed the premiership one week ago, a move Downing Street described as a demonstration of the robust ties between the two nations.
A key focus of the visit will be a trip to a naval base, where Burnham plans to announce the transfer of intellectual property for the "Stone Cloak" electronic warfare system. This technology, which consists of tablet-sized jammers designed to shield drones from detection, will allow Ukraine to manufacture the devices domestically. The Ministry of Defence has already supplied thousands of these units to Ukrainian forces, and the technology is slated for integration into future British long-range weaponry, including the Project Brakestop cruise missile initiative.
"Britain stands with Ukraine, shoulder to shoulder, and our support remains unwavering," Burnham stated, emphasizing that the UK remains committed to securing a "long lasting and just peace."
The two leaders are also scheduled to meet with over 200 Ukrainian military personnel who have been participating in Exercise Sea Breeze, a three-week maritime training program focused on counter-mine operations and warfighting capabilities in the Black Sea. Since the Russian invasion four years ago, the UK has provided £25bn in support to Ukraine.
President Zelensky, who previously expressed appreciation for the UK's steadfast stance, noted the importance of maintaining strong diplomatic relations despite leadership transitions. The meeting follows an invitation extended by Burnham during their initial call shortly after he took office.
