Recent Ukrainian drone operations have focused on large-scale logistics centers within Russia, resulting in the destruction of significant quantities of consumer goods. The strikes have primarily targeted Wildberries, Russia’s largest online retailer, as well as its competitor, Ozon.
Kyiv officials state that these companies are being targeted due to their role in supplying Russian military forces deployed on the front lines. However, analysts suggest the strategy serves a dual purpose. By disrupting the retail sector, Ukraine aims to create tangible inconveniences for the Russian public, thereby generating indirect political pressure on the Kremlin.
Matthew Sussex, an associate professor in strategic studies at Deakin University, noted that when citizens are unable to receive orders because the inventory has been destroyed, the conflict becomes a personal experience for the average consumer. Despite these mounting pressures, experts remain skeptical that such tactics will immediately force a change in policy. According to Sussex, President Vladimir Putin has tied his political legacy and historical standing to the invasion, making a withdrawal difficult to justify from his perspective.
