Thomas Andrews, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Cambodia, has announced plans to visit the Cambodia-Thailand border. The mission aims to conduct a personal assessment of the living conditions of civilians who have been forced to flee their homes due to regional conflict.
The upcoming visit was discussed during a meeting on July 22 between Andrews and Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen. Senate spokesperson Chea Thyrith noted that the rapporteur has been tracking the situation closely and intends to engage directly with affected families to better understand the challenges they face.
During the discussion, Hun Sen welcomed the visit, expressing a desire for the UN representative to witness the impact of the conflict on the local population. The Senate president also provided an overview of the border dispute, noting that July 24 marks the one-year anniversary of the conflict's onset.
According to figures provided by Hun Sen, military incursions by Thai forces in 2025 resulted in the displacement of nearly one million people. Furthermore, he stated that over 3,000 families remain unable to return to their properties, which he characterized as being under the illegal occupation of Thai forces.
