The United States military has executed a series of heavy strikes against the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in retaliation for an attempted ballistic missile attack on American troops stationed in Jordan earlier this week. According to US Central Command (Centcom), the operation targeted dozens of sites, including missile and drone facilities, command centers, and maritime defense infrastructure.
The US military stated that the strikes, which commenced at 20:00 ET on Wednesday and lasted approximately one hour, served as a "powerful response" to Iranian aggression. Centcom reported that all missiles fired by Iran during Tuesday's attempted attack on US bases and shipping in the Strait of Hormuz were successfully intercepted.
Iranian state media reported casualties resulting from the US operation, citing the Hormozgan University of Medical Sciences, which stated that three individuals—a man, a woman, and a two-year-old child—were killed in a residential area on Qeshm island. Reports indicated that strikes also impacted locations in Abadan and other southern and western regions of the country.
The latest escalation marks a breakdown in a brief period of relative calm, following the collapse of a ceasefire in June. Tensions have further intensified with recent joint US-Saudi strikes against Iranian-backed proxies in Iraq, an action the Iraqi presidency condemned as a violation of its sovereignty. Meanwhile, Jordanian authorities confirmed that their air defense systems intercepted five Iranian missiles on Thursday.
