The United States military has engaged in a sixth consecutive night of strikes against Iranian targets, according to US Central Command (Centcom). The operation is described as an effort to diminish Iran's military capacity as both nations continue to contest control over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime corridor that remains closed following Iranian blockades.
Iranian state media reported that US missiles impacted areas near the Gulf island of Qeshm, as well as locations in Bandar Abbas and Bushehr, the latter of which hosts a nuclear power plant. These strikes follow a series of reciprocal attacks, including reported Iranian strikes on US military installations in Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain.
Despite the escalation, the White House maintains that President Donald Trump remains open to diplomatic engagement. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that while the president intends to hold Iran accountable for actions against shipping in the strait, he is willing to pursue talks. Conversely, Iran’s chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, indicated that Tehran sees no obligation to follow agreements that do not serve its national interests, emphasizing the importance of maintaining Iranian control over the strait.
Conflicting reports have emerged regarding the status of US detainee Dena Karari. While President Trump publicly thanked Iran for what he termed a "gesture of Goodwill" regarding her release, Iran's judiciary has denied that any US prisoners have been freed or exchanged.
