US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held a three-hour meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday. The discussions, which took place at the Kremlin, are part of an ongoing effort by the Trump administration to facilitate a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.
During the meeting, President Putin acknowledged the complexity of the current situation, stating that he was "comfortable" working with the American representatives and noted a "high level of trust" in the process. Putin also confirmed that he had ordered a three-day suspension of strikes on Kyiv to ensure the safety of the diplomatic mission, though he clarified that this did not constitute a broader ceasefire across the rest of Ukraine.
The US envoys are scheduled to travel to Kyiv on Sunday to continue discussions with Ukrainian officials. President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that he has been in contact with the US team and is prepared for "substantive" conversations. In anticipation of the visit, Ukraine has also committed to refraining from strikes on Moscow for the same three-day window.
The diplomatic push follows recent aerial activity, with Zelensky reporting Russian strikes on airports in Kyiv and Boryspil, which he characterized as a reaction to the logistical preparations for the US delegation's travel. Additionally, a Russian strike in the Dnipro region resulted in four fatalities and five injuries.
While President Trump has indicated that his envoys are carrying a proposal to end the war, details regarding the content of these discussions remain private. Previous attempts by international mediators to secure a breakthrough have faced significant hurdles, particularly regarding territorial disputes and security guarantees.
