Following a series of dry thunderstorms on July 15, 2026, thousands of lightning strikes ignited numerous wildland fires across Oregon and Washington. The blazes, fueled by intense summer heat, extreme drought conditions, and gusty winds, quickly expanded across central and eastern Oregon.

By July 26, NASA satellite imagery revealed significant smoke plumes drifting northeast from dozens of large-scale fires. The scale of the destruction prompted state officials to implement air quality advisories for the eastern portion of the state. More than 10,000 firefighters were deployed to manage the crisis, with several major incidents—including the Hay Creek Complex, Brewer, Big Grass, Akawa Butte, and Powder River fires—reporting containment levels below 5 percent.

To address the threat to local communities, Oregon authorities invoked the Emergency Conflagration Act, specifically targeting dangerous fires such as the Shingle, Bench, Beachcomb, and Second Flat incidents. By July 27, reports indicated that over one million acres had been consumed within Oregon. Nationally, the situation remains severe, with the National Interagency Fire Center reporting that more than 4 million acres have burned across the United States, surpassing the 10-year seasonal average of 3.4 million acres.

NASA continues to provide real-time monitoring through tools such as the Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS), the Fire Event Explorer, and the Worldview browser to assist in tracking fire behavior and environmental impacts.
