A surge of dry thunderstorms across the Cascade Range on July 15, 2026, triggered thousands of lightning strikes throughout Oregon and Washington. By the following day, NASA satellite monitoring began identifying numerous wildfires erupting across central and eastern Oregon. These fires intensified rapidly, fueled by high temperatures, extreme drought conditions, and gusty winds.
By July 26, satellite imagery revealed thick smoke plumes spreading northeast from dozens of major blazes that had consumed hundreds of square miles. The resulting haze led state authorities to implement air quality advisories for eastern regions of Oregon. More than 10,000 personnel are currently engaged in suppression efforts, with several communities under evacuation orders.
Among the most significant active incidents identified on July 26 were the Hay Creek Complex, Brewer, Big Grass, Akawa Butte, and Powder River fires. To bolster the response to critical threats—including the Shingle, Bench, Beachcomb, and Second Flat fires—state officials activated the Emergency Conflagration Act. According to the National Interagency Fire Center, containment levels for several of these major fires remained below 5 percent.
Reports as of July 27 indicate that wildfires have scorched more than one million acres within Oregon. Nationally, the National Interagency Fire Center reports that over 4 million acres have burned across the United States, surpassing the 10-year average of 3.4 million acres for this time of year. NASA continues to provide real-time monitoring through tools such as FIRMS, the Worldview browser, and the Fire Event Explorer to track fire progression.
