A geothermal power plant in New Mexico, which had been nearing failure due to declining reservoir temperatures, has been restored to full capacity following an intervention by the startup Zanskar. The Lightning Dock facility, which originally came online in 2013, faced a significant drop in thermal output that rendered it uneconomical to operate prior to Zanskar’s acquisition in June 2024.

Before the takeover, the site experienced a temperature decline of 10 °F annually, with water temperatures falling to 250 °F—well below the 310 °F required for efficient operation. Zanskar’s cofounder and CTO, Joel Edwards, noted that the original production wells were only 2,500 feet deep and poorly positioned to access the reservoir's full potential.

Using advanced modeling, the company identified a more viable location and drilled a new well reaching 8,000 feet. Since beginning operations in May 2025, the new well has maintained a flow rate exceeding 4,000 gallons per minute. According to Edwards, the plant has "completely turned around" and produced more than double the electricity compared to its previous output. The facility currently provides 15 megawatts of power to the local grid, sufficient to supply approximately 11,000 homes.

The success at Lightning Dock challenges the conventional geothermal assumption that drilling deeper inevitably results in reduced water flow due to tighter rock formations. Ben Brenner, Zanskar’s director of federal affairs, stated that the findings "fundamentally change" the outlook for hydrothermal assets across the United States. Zanskar plans further upgrades to the site, suggesting that the industry may increasingly adopt the deep-drilling practices common in the oil and gas sector.
