An unusual astronomical photograph taken in June from Prasek, Czech Republic, has revealed a rare triple alignment involving the Sun, the International Space Station (ISS), and an airplane. The image features three distinct dark silhouettes against the bright solar disk, each with a different origin.
While sunspots—dark regions resulting from magnetic activity—were expected to appear on the Sun's surface, the other two silhouettes were the result of precise timing and a stroke of luck. The ISS was captured as part of a planned effort to photograph the station as it transited the Sun. However, an airplane unexpectedly crossed the frame at the exact moment of the exposure, creating a miniature partial eclipse.
According to the photographer, the probability of capturing both the space station and an airplane silhouetted against the Sun from a single location is approximately 30 million to one.
