NASA is inviting community college students across the United States to participate in the newly updated Community College Aerospace Scholars (NCAS) program. The initiative aims to bridge the gap between academic studies and professional careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) by providing direct access to NASA experts and mission insights.
The program is structured in two phases. During the fall cohort phase, students engage in virtual sessions with agency professionals and submit projects linking their current coursework to potential NASA roles. Up to 1,000 participants can receive a $500 award for their submissions. Successful students will then transition to a spring virtual career fair, where they can connect with industry leaders and compete for additional $250 prizes.
Alicia Baturoni Cortez, project manager for NASA’s Minority University Research and Education Project, noted that the program is specifically tailored to help community college students navigate their career paths, whether they choose to enter the workforce immediately or transfer to a four-year university. “What NCAS does is bring the stars down to ground level,” Cortez said.
The program has previously served as a catalyst for career changes. NASA interns Kim Alexander and Ashley Rodriguez, both NCAS alumni, recently transitioned into NASA Pathways internships after completing their university degrees. Their journey highlights the program's potential to guide students from community college classrooms to roles at facilities like the Kennedy Space Center and the Armstrong Flight Research Center.
Interested students must submit their applications by the deadline of Monday, Sept. 28. Further details regarding eligibility and program timelines are available through the official NCAS portal.
