On August 12, a NASA WB-57F high-altitude research aircraft conducted a specialized mission off the Icelandic coast to observe a total solar eclipse. By flying at an altitude of 50,000 feet, the aircraft successfully avoided atmospheric interference such as clouds, dust, and water vapor that typically obstruct ground-based observations.
The flight path was meticulously calculated to keep the aircraft within the Moon’s shadow for the maximum possible duration. Onboard high-resolution cameras documented the event, including the emergence of the solar corona as totality began. Footage from the cockpit also revealed the presence of Venus, Jupiter, and Mercury near the eclipsed Sun, while the horizon remained illuminated outside the path of the lunar shadow.
