NASA is set to launch the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on Sunday, August 30, at 7:26 a.m. EDT. Named in honor of the agency’s first chief of astronomy, the mission celebrates the legacy of Dr. Nancy Grace Roman, who was instrumental in the development of the Great Observatories program.
The observatory is destined for the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point (L2), located one million miles from Earth. This position allows the telescope to maintain a stable orbit alongside the James Webb Space Telescope. To commemorate the mission, a memory card containing the names of over 1.3 million people who submitted their information this summer is attached to the spacecraft.
Equipped with two primary instruments, the mission is designed to provide a broader view of the universe than previous telescopes. Its Wide Field Instrument features a 300-megapixel infrared camera capable of capturing images with the same resolution as the Hubble Space Telescope but with a field of view 100 times larger. Additionally, the Coronagraph Instrument will test advanced technology for directly imaging exoplanets by blocking the glare of host stars.
The primary mission is slated for five years, with the potential for a five-year extension. While the telescope is designed to be refuelable, NASA currently lacks the capability to service observatories at L2. The data gathered by the mission will be made public upon processing, allowing for collaborative analysis of dark matter, dark energy, and various cosmic phenomena.
Following its launch, the telescope will undergo a three-month period of deployment and calibration. NASA expects to release the first science images from the mission by early 2027. The launch will be broadcast live via the agency's official website.
