A recent deep-field photograph, captured with 25 hours of exposure time in Utah, offers a detailed look at the Pelican Nebula, formally designated as IC 5070. The nebula is separated from the neighboring North America Nebula by a dense molecular cloud composed of dark dust, identified as LDN 935.
The region is a significant site for astronomical research due to its ongoing star formation processes. Intense radiation from young, energetic stars is actively converting cold gas into hot gas. This transition is marked by an ionization front, which appears as a bright orange boundary in the upper right portion of the image. The nebula also contains dense filaments of cold gas that have resisted this transformation.
Scientists note that the appearance of the Pelican Nebula is temporary. As the distribution of stars and gas continues to evolve over millions of years, the structure will eventually lose its current shape, rendering its familiar name obsolete.
