Congaree National Park in South Carolina stands out among U.S. national parks for its unique geography, with 80 percent of its land area situated within the Congaree River floodplain. This environment supports one of the nation's most significant remaining tracts of old-growth bottomland hardwood forests, a landscape shaped by the river's constant movement and periodic flooding.

Satellite imagery from Landsat 9 reveals the river's winding path through the park, marked by ridges, swales, and paleochannels. These features, created as the river migrated over time, dictate the park's diverse ecosystems. The river’s natural tendency to meander through soft, flat terrain leads to the formation of oxbow lakes, such as the deep Weston Lake and the extensive, four-mile-long Bates Old River. These abandoned channels often evolve into wetlands or sloughs, providing a habitat for flood-tolerant cypress-tupelo forests.

The park’s dense forests were largely spared from the widespread logging that affected much of the Southeast in the 1880s, thanks to challenging environmental conditions like frequent flooding and muddy terrain. Recognizing the ecological value of these old-growth stands, Congress designated the area a national monument in 1976, and it was later elevated to national park status in 2003.

Regular flooding, which occurs throughout the year due to seasonal rains and storm events, plays a critical role in the park's health. These floods deposit nutrient-rich silt that supports the growth of exceptionally large trees. Over the years, the park has been home to numerous "champion" trees, with species such as loblolly pine, water hickory, and sweetgum holding state or national size records.
