A striking image captured on August 15 shows a Perseid meteor streaking across the night sky above the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos in La Palma, Spain. The meteor's colorful trail appears adjacent to the Milky Way, which is visible in the background with its distinct interstellar dust and starlight.
The foreground of the photograph features the LST-1, a prototype Large-Sized Telescope. As the first telescope built at this northern hemisphere location for the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory, the structure utilizes 198 hexagonal mirror segments and a specialized camera. Its primary function is to identify brief flashes of atmospheric light, lasting approximately one billionth of a second, which are caused by gamma-rays from distant cosmic events like active galaxies.
Beyond its scientific purpose, the telescope's mirror segments also captured a reflection of the Perseid meteor's atmospheric light during the observation.
