The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (RST) has officially commenced its mission to explore the universe after launching from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The observatory was carried into space aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.

While the new telescope features a primary mirror comparable in size to that of the Hubble Space Telescope, its design allows for a significantly wider field of view. By utilizing a more curved primary mirror, a closer secondary mirror, and a larger camera, the RST is capable of capturing 100 times more sky in a single image than its predecessor. This increased efficiency is expected to accelerate the discovery of distant supernovas, which provide data on the composition and expansion of the universe, as well as the identification of exoplanets that could offer insights into the potential for life beyond our solar system.

Unlike the Hubble Space Telescope, which orbits the Earth, the Roman Space Telescope is positioned to orbit the Sun, similar to the James Webb Space Telescope.
