On Tuesday, Sept. 1, two astronauts are scheduled to exit the International Space Station to perform a series of maintenance tasks and hardware installations. The operation, designated as U.S. spacewalk 99, is expected to last approximately six and a half hours, with live coverage beginning at 7 a.m. EDT and the excursion itself commencing around 8:30 a.m. EDT.
The primary objective for the crew is the replacement of a retroreflector located on the Harmony module’s forward port. This component is essential for assisting spacecraft with navigation during future docking and rendezvous maneuvers. Following this installation, the astronauts will focus on several secondary tasks, including the setup of data-relay jumper cables, preparations for future maintenance on the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer’s radiator, and the replacement of a truss-mounted high-definition camera.
The spacewalk will be conducted by NASA astronaut Jessica Meir and ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Sophie Adenot. Adenot, designated as crew member 1, will wear a suit featuring red stripes, while Meir, serving as crew member 2, will wear an unmarked suit. This mission marks the 284th spacewalk dedicated to the assembly and upkeep of the station. For Meir, this will be her seventh career spacewalk, placing her third among NASA women for total excursions, behind Peggy Whitson and Suni Williams. For Adenot, this will be her third time performing such an operation.
