Jeret Howard, a veteran who served as a U.S. Army combat medic, has begun a new chapter in his career as a civil servant at NASA’s Stennis Space Center in Mississippi. His appointment follows a federal workforce initiative aimed at converting long-term contractors into civil service positions to bolster the agency's core competencies.
Howard brings over 15 years of experience at the rocket propulsion test site to his new role as a logistics management specialist. Previously employed as a mechanical technician, he spent years building test stand infrastructure and performing technical maintenance. In his current capacity, he is responsible for procuring hardware and components essential for propulsion testing, leveraging his background to anticipate the needs of engineering teams while managing resources.
Beyond his administrative duties, Howard continues to apply his technical expertise by assisting new technicians and supporting ongoing projects, including preparations for Blue Origin’s testing at the facility. Howard noted that his transition to a direct NASA role is a continuation of his commitment to public service, stating, “It is a point of pride to go from being a 17-year-old just wanting to serve your country to coming full circle like this.”
A resident of Kiln, Mississippi, Howard views his career as an opportunity to set an example for his children. His work at Stennis aligns with the broader goals of the Artemis program, which seeks to return humans to the Moon and establish a lunar base. As NASA prepares for upcoming missions, Howard’s contributions help support both agency objectives and commercial partnerships, while fostering an interest in space exploration within his own family.
