NASA has officially expanded its communication infrastructure with the completion of Deep Space Station 23 (DSS-23), a 34-meter multifrequency beam-waveguide antenna located at the Goldstone complex near Barstow, California. The new facility was inaugurated during a ribbon-cutting ceremony held on August 25, 2026.
The addition of DSS-23 is a key milestone in the Deep Space Network’s (DSN) Aperture Enhancement Project. Launched in 2009, this initiative aims to bolster the network's capacity by installing six new 34-meter antennas capable of operating across various radio frequencies. These upgrades are designed to improve the agency's ability to track, command, and receive scientific data from spacecraft operating in deep space.
The Deep Space Network is managed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California on behalf of NASA’s Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) Program. The new antenna is expected to support mission communications for the coming decades.
