NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope successfully launched on Sunday at 7:26 a.m. EDT from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Carried by a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, the observatory is currently traveling toward the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point (L2), located approximately one million miles from Earth.
The mission aims to utilize infrared technology and a wide field of view to conduct rapid surveys of the cosmos. Scientists intend to use the telescope to research dark energy, dark matter, and planets outside our solar system. According to NASA, the telescope is capable of surveying the universe 1,000 times faster than the Hubble Space Telescope.
Ground control teams at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center confirmed that the observatory separated from the rocket 31 minutes after liftoff. Shortly thereafter, the telescope successfully deployed its solar panels and lower instrument sun shade. Over the coming days, the mission team plans to deploy the high-gain antenna and aperture cover, perform mid-course corrections, and activate the Coronagraph Instrument, which is designed to image Jupiter-like planets.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman noted that the mission was completed ahead of schedule and within budget. “Now, Roman will give us a new atlas of the universe, push the boundaries of discovery, and demonstrate what is possible when America’s space program pairs bold ambition with disciplined execution,” Isaacman said.
The telescope is expected to generate 1.4 terabytes of data daily, the highest volume of any NASA astrophysics mission to date. Following a three-month commissioning and calibration period, the agency anticipates releasing the first images from the telescope by early 2027. The project is a collaborative effort involving NASA, international space agencies from Europe, Japan, France, and Germany, as well as several industrial partners.
