NASA has selected Blue Origin to lead the development of a new telecommunications network designed to support ongoing and future exploration of Mars. The firm-fixed-price contract, which carries a maximum value of roughly $700 million, tasks the company with delivering a high-performance orbiter to the agency by the end of 2028.

Under the terms of the agreement, Blue Origin will manage the entire lifecycle of the project, including the design, integration, launch, and operation of the spacecraft. Once deployed, the network is intended to provide reliable, high-bandwidth data transmission, navigation services, and imagery for missions operating on the Martian surface and in orbit. The system is scheduled to be fully operational by 2030.

This initiative is part of NASA’s broader strategy to expand its communications infrastructure beyond Earth and the Moon. As the agency prepares for future human missions to the Red Planet under the Artemis program, the demand for robust data capacity is expected to rise. By utilizing private-sector capabilities, NASA aims to increase the flexibility and reliability of its deep-space communications while allowing the agency to prioritize scientific discovery and exploration goals.

The contract follows a request for proposals issued by the agency in May and will be overseen by NASA’s Space Communications and Navigation program.
