NASA officials and guests gathered at the Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex near Barstow, California, on August 25, 2026, to celebrate the completion of Deep Space Station 23 (DSS-23). The new 34-meter beam-waveguide antenna is the latest addition to the agency's global communications infrastructure.
DSS-23 is part of the long-running Aperture Enhancement Project, an initiative launched in 2009 to bolster the Deep Space Network (DSN) by installing six new 34-meter multifrequency antennas. These systems are designed to support a wide range of space missions by facilitating command transmission, spacecraft tracking, and the reception of scientific data across various radio frequencies.
The Goldstone site currently features a cluster of these advanced dishes, including DSS-24, DSS-25, and DSS-26. The facility also houses the historic 26-meter "Apollo Antenna," which dates back to 1967 and was instrumental in supporting the Apollo Program as part of the Manned Space Flight Network.
The DSN is managed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California for NASA’s Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) Program. The network serves as a critical link for maintaining contact with spacecraft operating throughout the solar system.
