NASA, in partnership with Colorado State University and Boston University, has launched the FarmFlux mission to investigate the impact of agricultural emissions on the Earth's atmosphere. The project utilizes a suite of over a dozen sensors designed to track the movement of methane, ozone, ammonia, and various particulates originating from livestock operations and farmland.
The current deployment in Colorado marks the beginning of the mission's flight operations. Following this phase, the research team plans to conduct further low-altitude flights over agricultural areas in Amarillo, Texas, between late October and early November.
Looking ahead, the mission is scheduled to expand its scope during the 2027 growing season, which runs from March through July. During this period, a NASA P-3 Orion aircraft will perform research flights over croplands in the Midwest and California’s Central Valley to gather additional data on atmospheric interactions.
