A 16-image panorama taken in 2014 highlights the contrast between the geothermal activity of Yellowstone National Park and the distant Milky Way galaxy. The photograph features Silex Spring, a 10-meter-wide pool in Wyoming, illuminated by artificial light. The vibrant colors within the spring are the result of bacterial layers thriving in the heated water, which is warmed by the Yellowstone Hotspot.
While steam rises from the spring due to underground magma, the central band of the Milky Way remains visible in the background, composed of light from billions of stars. The Yellowstone Hotspot, which powers these geothermal features, is also responsible for the region's volcanic history, including a major supervolcanic eruption approximately 640,000 years ago. Scientists note that a future eruption of similar scale would have significant impacts across North America.
