While traditional firefighting methods remain essential, the integration of artificial intelligence is transforming how forest fires are identified in France. In the Gironde region, AI-assisted camera networks have replaced human lookouts, providing a more reliable method for spotting blazes. These systems, developed by companies such as Midgard and FireTracking, can detect fires up to 20 kilometers away and distinguish between smoke and environmental factors like dust.

According to Jean-Simon Chaudier, CEO of FireTracking, the technology provides real-time video, mapping, and spread simulations directly to firefighters' mobile devices. By alerting crews up to 15 minutes earlier than traditional reporting methods, these systems allow for rapid intervention, which is critical in preventing small ignitions from escalating into major wildfires. In the Indre-et-Loire department, a €1.2 million investment has enabled the installation of 11 detection sites covering 6,000 square kilometers.

Despite these advancements in detection, experts emphasize that technology has yet to replace the physical labor required to extinguish large-scale fires. Guillaume Millet, a firefighter with 24 years of experience, notes that while drones and aircraft are useful for monitoring or reducing fire intensity, ground crews remain the primary force for managing flames. "It's always the firefighters on the ground, pulling the hoses, who extinguish the fires," Millet stated.

Looking toward the future, researchers are exploring new applications for autonomous technology. Projects like the French civil protection service's "Condor" program are testing solar-powered drones, while other startups are developing heavy-lifting drones capable of spraying water or chemical suppressants. These innovations aim to provide an autonomous first-response capability, potentially mitigating risks to personnel by assessing hazards like smoke and structural instability before firefighters enter a scene.
