Aviation safety experts have identified lithium-ion batteries as a primary risk for the airline industry, citing an increase in incidents ranging from smoke emissions to full-scale fires. According to the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), these batteries have remained among the top three safety concerns for several years, with global data indicating approximately two battery-related incidents per week.
The hazards associated with these power sources were recently highlighted during a flight to Las Vegas, where a passenger's battery pack overheated and ignited a seat. Crew members were forced to submerge the device in water to contain the blaze before the aircraft made an emergency landing. In a more severe case in January 2025, an Air Busan aircraft was destroyed on the tarmac in South Korea after a power bank in an overhead bin caught fire.
Experts note that while lithium-ion technology is not inherently more dangerous in the air, the confined environment of an aircraft cabin makes managing thermal runaway significantly more difficult. Pierre Kubiak, a battery technology engineer at the UK's National Physical Laboratory, explained that these batteries can reach temperatures between 700 and 1,000 degrees Celsius almost instantaneously. While major manufacturers have improved safety standards, concerns persist regarding the proliferation of low-cost, poorly regulated battery packs, vapes, and other portable electronics.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has launched a global campaign, "Travel Smart with Lithium Batteries," to educate passengers on proper handling. Aviation authorities emphasize that devices should never be placed in checked luggage, as they are harder to access in the cargo hold. If a device slips into a seat mechanism, passengers are advised to alert flight crew rather than attempting to retrieve it themselves, as crushing the battery can trigger a fire.
While researchers are exploring alternatives like sodium-ion batteries, current costs remain prohibitive for widespread adoption. Consequently, the industry continues to focus on rigorous crew training and strict adherence to safety protocols to mitigate the risks posed by the ubiquity of lithium-ion powered devices.
