Researchers utilizing data from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope have identified a significant slowdown in star formation within the Andromeda galaxy. According to findings published in The Astrophysical Journal, the galaxy has experienced a consistent decline in stellar production over the last 500 million years, with a particularly sharp reduction occurring within the most recent 40 million years.
To reconstruct this history, the research team analyzed approximately 200 million individual stars across two-thirds of Andromeda's disk. By mapping these stars, astronomers were able to distinguish between older, redder populations and younger, bluer stars, allowing them to track the galaxy's activity levels over time. The study suggests that the current rate of star formation has dropped to roughly one-fifth of a solar mass per year, a notable decrease from the one solar mass per year recorded 500 million years ago.
Much of this cooling activity is centered within a star-forming ring located 32,000 light-years from the galaxy's core. Researchers suggest this trend represents a natural transition rather than a depletion of available gas and dust. "It’s just like after running a marathon, sometimes you’ve got to take a bit of a breather," noted lead author Tobin Wainer of the University of Washington.
The study also examined the potential influence of the satellite galaxy M32. While the exact timing of past interactions remains uncertain, data shows a decrease in star formation near M32 that began approximately 60 million years ago, making it a primary suspect in the observed changes. Future observations from the upcoming Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope are expected to provide further clarity by imaging the entirety of Andromeda’s disk and surrounding halo.
