A long-exposure image taken last month at Death Valley Observatories in Nevada, USA, features an unexpected guest: a bright meteor streak cutting across the faint red glow of the Great Lacerta Nebula. The streak was caused by a small meteoroid, likely the size of a pebble, which vaporized upon entering Earth's atmosphere. The resulting light was produced by the heating and excitation of the surrounding air, while the trail of gas and dust left behind provides information regarding the object's chemical composition.

Observers are currently in a favorable period for meteor spotting, with three distinct meteor showers active this month. While visibility is currently challenged by the light of a bright gibbous Moon, conditions are expected to improve. The Perseids, the most prominent of the ongoing showers, are anticipated to reach their peak activity in approximately 10 days as the Moon wanes. This year's Perseid peak is notable for coinciding with a new Moon, which will also produce a total solar eclipse in certain regions.
