NASA is expanding its lunar exploration efforts through the newly announced CAPSTONE 02 mission. Scheduled for launch in 2027, the project aims to test critical technologies necessary for long-term lunar presence and the Artemis program. By utilizing two 400-kilogram spacecraft developed by Terran Orbital Systems, Inc., the mission will perform complex maneuvers, including autonomous navigation, proximity operations, and formation flying in lunar orbit.

The mission serves as a successor to the original CAPSTONE project, which successfully validated near rectilinear halo orbit operations. While the first mission focused on orbit stability and basic networking, CAPSTONE 02 is designed to transition into active infrastructure development. The spacecraft will alternate between "chaser" and "target" roles to simulate the docking procedures required for future crewed lunar landers. These tests are essential, as the gravitational influence of both the Earth and the Moon creates unique environmental conditions that cannot be fully replicated on the ground.

In addition to testing navigation software, the mission will utilize an optical imaging payload provided by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and continue research into the lunar radiation environment. According to Christopher Baker, lead of the In-Space Infrastructure portfolio at NASA, these flight tests are vital for converting complex challenges into reliable, long-term capabilities.

The project is funded by NASA’s Human Spaceflight Mission Directorate and the Research and Technology Mission Directorate, utilizing a Small Business Innovation Research Phase III contract. Management of the mission is overseen by the Small Spacecraft & Distributed Systems team at NASA’s Ames Research Center. Sean Fuller, Moon Base CAPSTONE manager, noted that the mission is intended to establish a foundation for future commercial services and deep space exploration.
