A recent Ipsos poll regarding the upcoming Clacton by-election has revealed a significant shift in voter sentiment, with 33% of respondents favoring the satirical candidate Count Binface—the persona of writer and comedian Jon Harvey—compared to 21% for Reform UK leader Nigel Farage. The by-election, scheduled for August 13, was prompted by Farage’s resignation from his parliamentary seat.
The survey highlights broader challenges for Reform UK, which has seen its national polling numbers decline since June 2025. While the party previously held 34% in voting intentions, recent data places them at 26%. Analysts point to several factors contributing to this trend, including a controversy surrounding £5 million in personal gifts received by Farage from Bitcoin billionaire Christopher Harborne. While Farage maintains the funds were a personal gift and did not require declaration, 74% of survey respondents believe a parliamentary investigation into the matter should proceed.
Furthermore, the party’s anti-establishment narrative appears to be losing traction. The poll found that 36% of respondents view Reform UK as being on the side of the establishment, a perception that complicates the party's positioning as an alternative to mainstream politics. Public sentiment regarding the by-election itself is also critical, with 54% of those polled suggesting Farage should have resigned and exited parliament entirely rather than triggering a new contest.
The decision by mainstream parties to withdraw from the Clacton race has left Farage competing against unconventional candidates, such as the Official Monster Raving Loony Party’s Howling Laud Hope. This dynamic has turned the by-election into a platform for protest, potentially undermining Reform UK's ambitions to be viewed as a serious contender for future governance.
