The Cambodian Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS) has launched a new initiative to enhance early childhood education through the "Synthesis-Ready Evidence Repository" program. The project aims to transition preschools toward a formative assessment model, which focuses on using observational data to tailor teaching methods to individual student needs.
Acting Minister Kim Sethany met with early childhood development specialists in Phnom Penh to discuss the project's implementation. The initiative is designed to provide teachers with scientific evidence-based coaching and monitoring mechanisms, allowing educators to adapt their instruction even in resource-constrained environments.
A key component of the project involves the integration of digital technology and artificial intelligence. These tools are intended to assist teachers in tracking child development, thereby reducing administrative burdens and increasing the overall efficiency of classroom instruction. The ministry plans to pilot these methods with 250 teachers across 50 resource schools, with guidance provided by core trainers.
Ministry spokesperson Kann Puthy noted that the country has seen a significant rise in the number of children aged three to five accessing educational services. This growth is attributed to ongoing reforms, including the establishment of model preschool standards and stronger public-community partnerships. The ministry intends to use the findings from this pilot to inform a national rollout of the assessment system across public and community preschools by 2027.
