Birdwatching is experiencing a digital transformation as millions of users turn to smartphone applications to identify avian species. Among the most prominent is Merlin Bird ID, developed by the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology. The application, which utilizes machine learning to recognize birds by their appearance and vocalizations, has reached 42 million total downloads, with 12 million recorded in 2026 alone.

The technology has evolved significantly since its 2014 launch, expanding from a database of 285 species to the ability to identify approximately 11,000 species worldwide. Jessie Barry, director of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, attributes this growth to advancements in artificial intelligence and the contributions of a global community of birdwatchers who provide data to train the system. While the app has facilitated 4.4 billion identifications, experts and conservationists caution that such tools should not be used as a substitute for professional verification in official records.

The trend is particularly notable among younger demographics, including Gen Z, who are increasingly sharing their birding experiences on social media platforms. Users like Megan Szostak, a San Francisco-based birder, suggest that these apps have made the hobby more accessible by removing the barrier of needing specialized prior knowledge. "I think that it's been a really great tool that I've integrated into my birding routine," Szostak said.

The success of these platforms has also spurred innovation in the field. Software engineer Sam Lewis developed an app called Lifer, which incorporates gamification elements similar to collectible card games. By allowing users to collect virtual cards based on their sightings, Lewis aims to engage those who enjoy the technical and competitive aspects of tracking rare species. To address conservation concerns, Lifer obscures the precise locations of rare breeding birds and contributes user data to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility.

Despite the rise of new features and competitors, developers emphasize that the primary goal remains encouraging people to engage with nature. "We really want Merlin to be fun and easy to use, first and foremost," Barry stated, noting that the technology is intended to enhance the experience of being outdoors.
